Bio

Anthony Sciscione, DO serves as director of the Delaware Center for Maternal And Fetal Medicine. He also is director of the OB/GYN residency program at Christiana Hospital in Newark, Delaware. Dr. Sciscione graduated from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1987 and completed his OB/GYN residency at Christiana Care in 1992. After completing fellowship training (1994) in maternal-fetal medicine at Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, in Baltimore, MD, he returned to Christiana Care (then called Medical Center of Delaware) to serve as director of Perinatal Research, in the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine. He remained with Christiana Care for the next 9 years serving as director of Research in the OB/GYN Department; director of the Fetal Assessment Center; associate director and then director of the OB/GYN Residency Program. From 2003 to 2006 he served as director of the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine at Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, PA, and then as chief of Obstetrics and director of the Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine, at Crozer-Chester Medical Center in Upland, PA. He also held faculty positions at Johns Hopkins, Jefferson Medical College and Drexel University College of Medicine during this time. In 2006, Dr. Sciscione returned once again to Christiana Care to serve as director of the OB/GYN Residency Program and director of Maternal-Fetal Medicine. He is board certified in both specialties. He is also continuing as a professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Drexel University College of Medicine. Dr. Sciscione has served as principal and co-investigator on a number of national clinical studies and has published widely, including most recently on a study conducted with the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) on Fetal Pulse Oximetry and Cesarean Delivery (Engl J Med 2006; 355:2195-2202, Nov 23, 2006). His primary research interests are focused on the induction of labor and premature rupture of membranes. Currently he is a co-investigator on an NICHD-sponsored trial to evaluate the effectiveness of Vitamins C and E to prevent recurrent pre-term, premature rupture of the membranes. Dr. Sciscione is a lecturer and reviewer for journal articles in maternal-fetal medicine and obstetrics and gynecology. Recent projects have included writing a book chapter on labor induction and co-editing a book on labor and delivery. His hobbies include tennis with his wife and coaching his children’s baseball team.
